To unravel this, we must look to 1655. Brilliant mathematician Blaise Pascal was attempting to invent a perpetual motion machine. His experiment failed to defy physics, but his frictionless wheel accidentally birthed modern casino gaming.

The "666 myth" took hold in the 19th century thanks to François Blanc, who introduced the single-zero European wheel. To aggressively market his Monte Carlo resort, François allegedly encouraged a rumor that he traded his soul to the devil to learn the wheel's secrets, pointing to the sum (1 through 36) as proof.
